Tooth filling

Dental caries is basically the decay involving the tooth structures. Tooth is made up of different layers such as enamel (outermost layer), dentin (middlemost layer) and the pulp. It is the innermost layer i.e the pulp that contains the nerves responsible for the sensation of pain and temperature changes. When the decay involves only the enamel and dentin, there is usually no pain experienced by the patient and is ignored by the patients. If the decay is treated in an early stage, it involves removing the decayed part and then replacing the tooth structure using the tooth type filling material.

There are two types of filling materials available.

1) Siver filling

2) tooth coloured filling material.

Silver filling is the first of the filling material introduced in dentistry and was used since decades for the treatment of caries. It is basically an alloy of siver and mercury. Owing to various disadvantages and biohazards due to mercury, its no more used in the dentistry for the treatment purposes.
Tooth colored composite filling material is one of the recent advances in Dentistry. The major advantage with this filling material is that it is tooth coloured and unlike silver filling doesn’t contain mercury and hence is not hazardous to the body.

It is important to treat dental caries on time, if not will cause severe pain requiring either RCT or removal of the tooth and subsequently multiple visits to the clinic.

Dentistry is no longer just a case of filling and extracting teeth, as it was for many years. Nowadays many people turn to cosmetic dentistry, or ‘aesthetic dentistry', as a way of improving their appearance, much as they would use cosmetic surgery or even a new hairstyle.
