RCT(root canal treatment)
The tooth is made up of 2 parts: crown and root. The crown is what you see when you open your mouth. The root is below the gum line. The hard outer shell of crown is enamel which protects the underlying structures from getting infected by bacterial invasion.
The root canal is a hollow cavity within the tooth that houses the vital part of the tooth- the pulp. The pulp provides nutrition to the tooth via blood vessels and gives feeling to the tooth via nerves.
When the decay of the tooth has infected the nerves of the tooth (located in the centre of the tooth) or because of the trauma to the tooth ( nerves are opened), the best available treatment for saving the tooth is the RCT. Root canal treatment is the treatment in which, first the infected nerves are removed, the area is thoroughly cleaned with a disinfectant and the area is then filled up with artificial nerves. The major advantage of the RCT is that the patient gets relieved of the pain and the tooth can be further used for the purpose of chewing without undergoing the stress of removal of the tooth.
Some indications of the need for RCT:
• An abscess (pus) on the gums.
• Sensitivity to hot and cold.
• Swelling and/ or tenderness.
• Spontaneous pain or throbbing while biting.
• discolouration of the tooth.
• Severe pain during sleep.
• Single Sitting RCT
Complete RCT procedures requires visiting the clinic 3-4 times. Advancement in RCT is Single Sitting RCT, in which the entire procedure is completed in single visit. This relieves the pain and also the time as multiple visits are not required.
